Sappho was a female poet of ancient Greece, who lived part of her life on the island of Lesbos.
A statue of Sappho was donated to Letchworth in 1907 and has been moved to her current place in Howard Gardens in 2012. The original statue was sadly stolen in 1998.
Her symbolism with Letchworth revolves around the suffrage movement, which was fiercely championed and campaigned for by local women of Letchworth and the surrounding area.
